Packing

onebag.com – I found this a huge help in writing my initial packing list.

Accommodation

hostelworld.com – comprehensive for hostels and sometimes includes budget hotels. Not always cheap but always worth checking.

booking.com – our favourite hotel booking site.

airbnb.com – stay in people’s homes for much less than the cost of a hotel – thanks to Alice for this tip, it’s saved us a fortune!

Travel tips

My favourite spot is thorntree.com

Transport

Flights: momondo.com – by far the best meta search engine for flights that we’ve found.

Cruises: cruisecompete.com – get quotes from several agents for the cruise you’re looking at.

Japan: hyperdia.com

US:

 amtrak.com – for trains,

routefriend.com – for all public transport options (still a bit “beta” but good for some areas);

megabus.com – cheap comfortable buses with wi-fi and power points.

Stay in touch

Facebook/WordPress – they are linked so each post is also linked to my facebook page – let’s everyone know I’m still alive and where I’m at, even if they don’t bother to click through to the full post.

Skype

Recipes

epicurious.com – I’ve been a fan of this website so long that I only use something else if it doesn’t have the recipe I need. On the road select the “quick and easy” option in the search screen and make your youth hostel buddies look up from their instant noodles, envious.
